One of the most popular non-playable characters in Fire Emblem: Three Houses has gotten some love from hackers, and he’s been made into a rather useful character thanks to a recent exploit from a community member. Fire Emblem: Three Houses isn’t a game many people think of when discussing hackable titles, as its community isn’t exactly robust when it comes to modding or exploits, as is often the case with Nintendo Switch titles.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is one of the best-reviewed titles of 2019, a game that has helped pad out the Switch’s already stellar exclusive library. Although the Fire Emblem series is well known for its tactical combat and war narratives, Three Houses switches things up by introducing several social simulation elements that will be familiar to those who have played Persona games. While Fire Emblem: Three Houses is new to that genre, however, the game executes on it in such a way that it immediately stands out as one of the top qualities of the new title. Because of that social sim leaning, fans have also become more invested in the wide array of supporting characters, even if they are never added to the protagonist’s party through narrative beats or the Fire Emblem: Three Houses recruitment system.
Of those supporting characters, the Garegg Mach Gatekeeper is one of the most popular. On Twitter, a Fire Emblem hacker named Christo “Cirosan” Brittain uploaded videos of the Gatekeeper and Death Knight as playable characters. Brittain achieved this by using a save-game editor, according to an interview with the hacker from Kotaku, and claims that the characters had their own stats pre-loaded into the game - including a whopping 99 charm stat for the Gatekeeper, which makes it by far the highest in the game. It’s almost as if the developers were fully aware of how likeable the bit character was.
Perhaps more amusingly is the fact that, according to the game, Gatekeeper is 1cm tall. Fans might have to adjust the way they’re drawing him in fan art, a popular pastime for Fire Emblem: Three Houses community members thanks to the character’s immense popularity. Unfortunately, the hack still can’t make the Gatekeeper into one of the Fire Emblem: Three Houses romance options.
Given how cumbersome hacking on the Nintendo Switch can be, it’s not likely many Fire Emblem fans will be adding the Gatekeeper to their games, even if he is likely the most requested non-recruitable character since launch. The fact that there’s an option for it - and that he mysteriously has such high Charm - is rewarding knowledge in its own right, though, and should make fans of Fire Emblem: Three Houses happy that the developer seemingly new how wonderful the character was before release.
