2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy ended with a slight cliffhanger when it came to the backstories of a few characters. The ragtag team had come together for the greater good, and found new purpose in protecting those who cannot protect themselves. Gamora is no longer the assassin of Thanos; Rocket and Groot aren’t just in it for the money, Drax now wants to kill Thanos, and Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord discovers that he’s the descendant of some ancient mysterious race on his father’s side.

It didn’t take long for James Gunn, who’s back writing and directing the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, to confirm that Star-Lord’s father would be very different than who it is in Marvel Comics. Instead of J’Son of Spartax being his dad, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is making Ego the Living Planet - an extremely different character - the father of Quill.

Ego is played by legendary action and sci-fi star Kurt Russell who was seen briefly in exclusive GOTG 2 footage played for attendees at San Diego Comic-Con last July but since then, he’s been entirely left out of the marketing materials, only seen in toy lines and leaked promo art. Tonight in Jimmy Kimmel Live! however, that all changed with the slightest of teases. Marvel Studios and Disney released the brand new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer and finally, a glimpse of Ego in his human form… he looks like Kurt Russell:

That is, if Kurt Russell were a character in the Destiny video game. There’s still no art or anything of what Russell could look like in planet form, assuming he does appear in that form. But he must, right? It’s a James Gunn movie and he chose this movie for a reason. And check out the pulpy sci-fi visuals in the trailer, especially on the colorful bubble planet. That’s maybe Ego. It’s difficult to say since the cast and crew were super secretive about Russell’s character when we visited the set last April.
